Growing up in the flat lands of the midwest, Kyle began his paddling journey during his teenage years at a summer camp in northern Minnesota. The camp specialized in back-country canoe trips across Canada. He began guiding canoe trips with the same organization when he was 17 and continued guiding every summer until age 24. 

“During this time I learned a lot about self-support canoe trips, how to read and run water via open canoe, and that expeditions require a tremendous amount of planning, grit, and persistence, but offer incredible rewards.” 

Those formative years on the water showed Kyle what an outdoor life can provide. Kyle discovered whitewater kayaking simultaneously with guiding canoe trips when he enrolled in a kayak club at college. Once he began kayaking he did not stop. Following college, he moved to Colorado in 2015 to take his first teaching job at a school in Edwards. 

“I spent my summers off as a teacher running around the state trying to get better at this obscure and thrilling activity. I found my sport with kayaking and constantly wanted to improve.” 

With a passion for education and whitewater kayaking, Kyle began working as a kayak instructor during the Summer of 2020, before becoming the owner of Alpine Kayak in 2023. Kyle looks forward to the future of what Alpine Kayak can become for local kids in this community. 

“I firmly believe that kayaking is an incredible skill that allows one to see some of the most beautiful places in the world. I have made it my mission to help others learn this skill and set out and experience some of these places for themselves. It is hard to put into words what kayaking has given me.” 

When Kyle is not kayaking or working at the local ski academy as a math teacher he can be found snowboarding, backpacking, and spending time with his wonderful fiance.
